Description: A grant of $5,500 pesos to provide continued funding for a feline trap, sterilization and release program.
Progress/Outcome: Through this grant, 20+ island cats will be trapped, sterilized, marked, treated and released - assisting in the decrease in stray felines on Isla Mujeres in a humane and compassionate manner. By sterilizing just one cat (using the cat multiplier*), in one year you will have prevented the birth of an additional 12 cats. To- date, PEACE has helped to secure funding to provide for 80 cat sterilizations, resulting in the prevention of an additional 960 cats a year on Isla Mujeres.

Description: A grant of $4,500 pesos to provide funds for full and partial and English class scholarships.
Progress/Outcome: The grant will provide approx. twelve students with full and partial scholarships for the current Sept-Oct session of classes. Through these scholarships twelve children, youth and adults will learn/improve their ability to speak English, which will broaden their work opportunities in the future.


Project: Summer Soccer camp
status:  Completed
Dates: July 2008 - August 2008
Description: In collaboration with the Dept. of Youth, Sports & Recreation, PEACE coordinated volunteer soccer teachers to help augment the summer youth soccer program.
Progress/Outcome: Due to the help of the volunteers, the program was expanded and 40+ girls and boys living on Isla Mujeres were actively involved in the free summer soccer camp lead by coaches who taught them skills and promoted team play. Everyone had lots of fun!


Project: Local Youth Art Contest
status:  Completed
Dates: June 2008 - July 2008
Description: PEACE coordinated a local youth art contest with the grand prize of a laptop that was generously received as a donation.
Progress/Outcome: PEACE received many beautiful and creative entries from youth all over the island. The winner was a talented and artistic middle-schooler who is now the proud owner of a laptop computer, which she can use to advance her studies.


Project: Donation Coordination
status:  In Progress
Dates: April 2008 - Ongoing
Description: Supporting a variety of community organizations by serving as a bridge between the local community and the tourist community through helping to identify need and the disbursement of new supplies to community organizations.
Progress/Outcome: PEACE has been collecting up-to date organizational needs lists, communicating these needs and assisting in the collection and distribution of donated items. PEACE also has coordinated specific donor requests, i.e. identifying a disadvantaged student for a donated laptop. Through this work, community organizations increase their supply of up-to date needed items, helping to provide them with resources to carry out their missions.

Description: A specific donation of $10,500 pesos was received to provide continued funding for a feline trap, sterilization and release program. PEACE assisted in the coordination of the donation and the follow-up reporting on the outcomes.

Description: A grant of $10,000 pesos towards the labor construction costs of the new Environmental Education Community Center on Isla Mujeres.
Progress/Outcome: The Environmental Education Center has just recently been completed and the first workshops were held at the end of September! The objective of the center is to help promote in the community a better understanding of conservation and protection of natural resources along with the development of an environmental culture that promotes the participation of all sectors in the community. The new Environmental Education Community Center will hold different activities for children and adults, including:
  • Workshops to teach local artists the manufacturing of crafts with recycled materials
  • Training and the formation of Environmental Promoters
  • Conferences, courses and seminars
  • Providing a demonstration site for the production of compost and cultivating vegetables
  • Through this center people living on and visiting Isla Mujeres will increase their knowledge about how to live and work in an environmentally friendly way. This knowledge when put into practice, will help to create a healthy environmental culture on Isla.

    Description: A $30,000 peso grant for the construction of an outdoor recreational area for children with special physical, academic and behavioral needs.
    Progress/Outcome: The multi-use court has been constructed and the children are playing already! The new space will expand safe and accessible play options for children with special needs.

    Description: A grant of $15,000 pesos towards three months of support for the Island’s local dog shelter and animal care program.
    Progress/Outcome: Through this grant the health and welfare of Isla dogs continues to improve - Island dogs were spayed and neutered, vaccinated, and received tests for distemper, and the kennel where homeless dogs live received badly needed renovations.

    Description: A $1,000 peso grant to provide seed money for the creation of a new line of body lotions to sell on behalf of Isla Animals.
    Progress/Outcome: The new line of lotion has been researched, concocted, attractively packaged and is now available for sale downtown at Mañana, Cool Ice Cream and Andále. The sales have been positive and the proceeds will go towards Isla Animals and reinvestment in the project, increasing the funding for the organization.

    Progress/Outcome: Through this grant 27 students received a scholarship; 26 completed the course with 20 of those students registering for the next level. Twenty-six children, youth and adults learned/improved their ability to speak English, which will broaden their work opportunities in the future.
